Sybille Kuntz Riesling Trocken 2007

This is the beautiful and steep Lieser Niederberg-Helden as it runs into the Mosel river. It's amazing, right. It's known as the center of the Mosel valley. It's just north of Brauneberg and Wehlen Sonnenuhr vineyards. The soil in Lieser is blue-gray devonian slate and super steep at a 75% incline facing south southwest. Essentially, what all this adds up to is that Sybille is sitting on some great land and combine that with her natural approach to winemaking (acting Biodynamic as she calls it) she is destined to make luscious, focused and minerally wines.

Her 2007 Riesling Trocken may be one of the best wines we've had this year that is easily accessible and affordable. It's expressive! It has great aroma of a super ripe pear and fresh cut apple. It offers a richness that is not heavy or cloying, but just present. It has great acidity and minerality in the form of tart, crisp, cold stone fruit and then leaves you with a very very determined finish that makes you salivate. It's a pleasure and it's great with food--spicy shrimp on the grill or, even something unconventional, like fried chicken.

Sybille Kuntz
With that awesome smile exuding friendliness who wouldn't want to buy her wine? She works closely with her husband Markus Kuntz-Riedlin to make seven different wines - all riesling. She started in 1990 and the vines are now between 40-80 years old. Her focus is on low yield wines that show their commitment to producing pure and natural rieslings that are the result of superb grapes. She says her personal motto is, "wine is made in the vineyard, not in the winery" and boy is it ever. Even Jancis Robinson says that if you have ever doubted dry German riesling, go out and grab a bottle of Sybille's dry riesling.  She'll change your mind. www.sybillekuntz.de
