Domaine de Regusse Aligote 2008

The estate was founded in 1970 and is located in the town of Pierrevert in the area of Haute Provence. It sits just at the base of the Luberon mountain (a stones throw from Marseille) at altitudes of 1,400 to 1,600 feet. Rather picturesque the Domaine strives to make sure that its beauty is maintained practicing sustainability in the vineyard. They have committed to respecting the environment, the terroir, the heritage and traditions of the Haute Provence.

The 2008 Regusse Aligote goes through a traditional vinification with cold maceration in temperature controlled tanks for 20 days.  Its bright fresh flavors can be contributed to the clay and limestone it's grown in and as mentioned many times already - its altitude.  It leaves us to enjoy a versatile, refreshing, easy drinking and well priced wine for the spring.

So, you know how William is going to be king and Harry isn't?  They call them the heir and the spare. That's sort of how Aligote is to Chardonnay in the kingdom of Burgundy. Chardonnay is heir and Aligote is, well, the spare. Often Aligote (pronounced Ali-go-tay) is difficult for most wine drinkers. It's super dry, minerally and full of racy, lemony flavor.  It's crisp and sometimes catches you off guard in its austere nature.  However, it seems Aligote from Provence in high altitudes becomes floral, slightly aromatic and almost fruity. It retains its crisp dry character, but seems to be softened by the heights in which it is grown.  And, unlike many white grapes, Aligote gets to boast its plantings in countries such as Romania, Russia, Ukraine, Moldova and Bulgaria.
