Josef Reuscher Erben Piesporter Goldtropfchen Riesling Spatlese 2007

You must be asking yourself what were we thinking? Well, good things come at a price. And this is a big linguistic price you are about to pay. Let's see... Josef Reuscher Erben (that's the guys name - he could be alive or he could be dead) Piesporter (town) Goldtropfchen (vineyard site) Riesling (grape) Spatlese (pradikat level). We apologize in advance for the extra effort, yet it will be worth it.

Dark yellow, rich and unctuous the Erben Spatlese is pineapple-y, with great acidity and a clean finish. It's that straightforward, even though its name is not!

Goldtropfchen
German for "little drops of gold" the Goldtropfchen is an amphitheater-shaped Piesporter Goldtröpfchen vineyard that has been highly esteemed for centuries. It was apparently built by the Romans. Descending down the paved road that weaves through the steep vineyard, a beautiful view of the village and the surrounding countryside unfolds. Goldtröpfchen’s vineyards, all with southeast- to southwest-facing expositions, rise dramatically over the village from the banks of the Mosel in an impressively long (over several kilometers) curving bend. They have deep clayey (red!) slate soils before reaching rock which is what gives the wine its distinct character and intense drink-ability.
