Gritsch Kalmuck Gruner Veltliner 2008

The Kalmuck is from the smaller area of Spitz on the Danube in the Wachau and is harvested by hand and then goes through a strict selection.  The young, ambitious winemaker, Franz-Josef Gritsch stands by his own adage of "honesty - loyalty - decidedness" and it makes for great wine.

The Kalmuck Gruner offers up lemon drop, herbs and black pepper on the nose and is fresh, spicy and citrusy on the palate.  It provides the hallmark minerality, but different than many has a richness about it. It can be rainy day white or sunny warm white - it's that versatile and the price gives you versatility too. One for you or 6 for friends...

Kalmuck was the jacket worn by the wine growers in the Wachau region when they were working in the vineyards.  The wine is decorated with the Kalmuck pattern as a symbol of its heritage and tradition. Ironically, the Kalmuck Janker (as it's locally referred to) is back in fashion and as the winemaker emphatically states "can be easily combined with jeans!" And a Sox cap too?
