Ferrando Canavese Rosso 2009

Strict respect for tradition combined with a thorough knowledge of modern oenology gives Ferrando's wine the unmistakable typicity and quality that has won them fame worldwide. The wines offered by Ferrando reflect the diversity of the Canavese region. From lovely, light spumante to rich full passito and full-bodied reds. The natural concentration and complexity comes from the vineyard.

The Canavese Rosso we bring you is predominantly nebbiolo with the addition of barbera. The wine is quite lovable to us because it has the complexity Ferrando is known for, but with some bright fruit and an inherent Italian-ness about it in its texture and nose. It's a touch rustic, but still elegent. A touch earthy, but approachable.

The wine has one of our favorite things - character and uniqueness at a great value. It gives you a bright cherry, minerally and slightly earthy nose and a mid-weight, drinkable, cherried palate. It has great acidity, it's juicy and it can withstand something grilled for summer.

Luigi, Roberto + Andrea Ferrando
It would seem both Luigi, and his sons, Roberto and Anrdrea do not like to have their picture taken. Instead we bring you their best known visual image - the Ferrando Carema Etichetta Nera. We would argue this is his best known work and, therefore, the best way to imagine him and his family's work in the Canavese and Carema regions. Nebbiolo reigns supreme in both areas which is really no surprise since we are in Italy's Piedmont region.

Luigi Ferrando has long been the leading winemaker of the Canvese where his family's winemaking tradition goes back to 1900. Like many of our other producers, he has strong ties to his local region. His attachment and commitment run deep, and have led him to collaborate with other winemakers and academics. They are responsible for discovering and preserving local winemaking traditions that might otherwise have been lost (such as vinifying the white grape Erbaluce into a dry wine). His sons, Roberto and Andrea, now work with him on the estate, thereby assuring the continuation of the Ferrando tradition.
