Domaine de la Bergerie Rose de Loire 2008

Nestled in the Coteaux du Layon in the larger region of Anjou sits Domaine de la Bergerie. While the region is dedicated to Chenin Blanc and Cabernet Franc, it is important to also produce rose wines such as Rose de Loire and Cabernet d'Anjou (its heftier and riper sibling).

Made with old vine Grolleau, or Groslot, and Cabernet Franc Domaine de la Bergerie makes a powerful and rich Rose de Loire, which is why we've chosen to feature the 2008. The Grolleau spends 36 hours in cold maceration and the Cabernet Franc spends 12 hours. The time on the skins give it its dark ruby-purple hue.

A round and rich body with an uncanny resemblence to fresh, bright cranberry juice this wine has a beautiful balance of rich fruit and acidity. Great Loire minerality with a long dry finish make it perfect for most meals. This is not your light pink Provencal rose at all - this rose needs food!

meet the winemaker

Yves Guegniard
He came back to the Domaine in 1979 and joined his sister, Marie-Agnes, to make wine. The estate has been in the family for seven generations and in that time has been passed from Mother to Son and from Father to Daughter. The Domaine currently has 36 hectares planted to mostly Chenin Blanc and Cabernet Franc.

Since his arrival he has made quality his chief priority. They employ methods such as leaf removal, green harvest, low yields and severe sorting during harvest time to make clean, true and well balanced wines. They then vinify each parcel of land separately to produce a wine that maintains "authenticity and the expression of terroir" as they say. A most important word indeed.
