Domaine Augis Valencay 2010

Valencay (vah-lehn-SAY) is a recently promoted AOC wine appellation (it gained AOC status in 2004) in the Loire region of France that adjoins the Touraine appellation. While it extends across fourteen communes in two départements (Indre and Loir-et-Cher) its total extent is only 142 hectares, which is about 350 acres or, easier to imagine, 1/2 a square mile. It's, uh, how do you say... petite.

The wine is incredibly easy to drink, enjoyable and familiar. It is, afterall, sauvignon blanc. It is older vines, grown in clay and silex soils which give it a great mineral backbone. The wine does ferment in 400 liter, 2-5 year old oak barrel and not stainless steel. It imparts structure, some roundness and complexity to the wine.

It offers a beautiful nose of quince and fresh peaches. It is slightly more citrusy than tropical, but does have a nice weightiness to compliment its bright flavors and clean finish.

Philippe Augis
One man show. He has 18 hectares total undervine, 14 of which are AOC Touraine and the other 4 in Valencay. In Valencay he grows all Sauvignon Blanc and a little Chardonnay. The AOC allows growers to blend Chardonnay with Sauvignon Blanc, and although he did this in the past, he now only likes to use 100% Sauvignon Blanc for the cuvee.

Philippe is a great man who works incredibly hard. If he isn't in the vineyards (which he is always there by 5am) he is in his cellar, and when he's not there, he is out selling his wine. According to the Importer (Oz Wine Co.), what may be the coolest thing about him is that he hunts wild boar with a knife and his dog. He has his dog corner the beast against a tree and Philippe then lunges with his knife to make the kill- a real man's man!
