Caparone Cabernet Sauvignon "French Camp Vineyard" 2005

We make no bones about the fact that we don't champion many California producers in the wine shop. Why? Well, much of the "good stuff" has been noted in wine publications and therefore is too expensive for everyday, or, the affordable is mainstream and often times has additives. So, we work hard to find the few remaining yield and quality conscience vintners who make value driven wines with moderate alcohol and good balance. When we find them, we rejoice!

Caparone Winery is one such story. It is a super small winery, the only employees are Dave and Marc Caparone - father and son. They sort of redefine small production when Dave can't recall off-hand how many cases he produces - which we know first hand as one of our roving team ended up at the winery.

Caparone's Cabernet Sauvignon is dense, lush and full of ripe dark cherry fruit. It has great structure and even better acidity. The tannins are mild with a touch of spice in mid-palate, but the wine has focused length. The wine is great just opened, better twenty minutes later and sliding into smooth an hour into dinner.

We bring you another father and son team, but this time from California. They introduce themselves the best saying,
"Since 1979 Caparone Winery has specialized in rich, complex red wines, made using traditional minimalist techniques and sold at fair prices. Located northwest of Paso Robles, California, we are one of the oldest small, artisan wineries in the region."
They go on to say that they spent time finding the right vines to their micro-climate so that they would produce good fruit and varietal character at moderate alcohol levels. That is a point so many consumers miss and so many producers almost ignore. We are grateful to have found accessibility to these guys and their wine.

Dave Caparone has been making wine in Paso Robles since 1973 and is considered one of the most experienced winemakers in the region. One of his key beliefs: make wine with as little interaction as possible. There is no fining or filtering of the wines which make them great wines to develop over time. As you can see since their latest release is the 2005 vintage.

Staying true to their ancestral roots they produce local varietals like cabernet sauvignon, merlot and zinfandel, but also produce Italian varietals like sangiovese, nebbiolo and aglianico. We also have the sangiovese in the shop if you are so inclined!
