2006 bodegas carrau tannat

Bodegas Carrau is a family owned and run winery with deep roots in winemaking culture.  Two hundred and fifty eight years ago the Carrau family purchased their first vineyard in the Catalonia district of Spain.  In the early 1900s a 7th generation member of Carrau lineage moved his family to Uruguay. They quickly joined the local consortium before 8th generation Juan Francisco Pujol founded the family’s winery, Bodegas Carrau in 1976.  Juan Francisco Pujol imported Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Sauvignon Blanc, Chardonnay and of course Tannat from French viticulturists to fill his vineyard acreage.  With extreme attention to detail and a deep pride in his family’s heritage he molded his dream into an internationally recognized winery.  Today Juan Francisco’s son Francisco Carrau oversees every nuance of the Bodegas Carrau carrying on the nine generational family legacy with great dignity and honor.

meet the vine

100% tannat

A grape native to the western Basque-influenced regions of France and most notably Madiran.  Here the wines produced from the grape are high in tannins, rich in raspberry fruit and deep in color.  More recently the grape has been claimed as the national grape of Uruguay after making its first move across the ocean to the southern reaches of South America about a century ago.  The ancient soils and drastic climate of Uruguay create Tannats with ripe fruit flavors, and softer more supple tannic structures.
