Torres Vina Esmerelda 2008

So, lets cut to the chase shall we?  The 2008 Vina Esmerelda is 85% moscatel de alejandria and 15% gewurztraminer - what! yup, gewurztraminer.  It is truly like seeing your first daffodil of spring as this wine smells of white blossoms, peaches and orange zest. Much to our surprise it tastes zippy, fresh and mineral-ly - dry and not sweet like you might expect.  It is refreshing, juicy and, well, it makes you smile.

Miguel Torres
It reminds us of Jose Arcadio Segundo, Aureliano and then Aureliano Segundo from the beautiful novel One Hundred Years of Solitude where every male character echos his predecessor and so, in the Torres winery, the same story continues.  Miguel Torres currently oversees the winery in Catalonia.  Before him was Jaime Torres Vendrell, Miguel Torres Vendrell and Miguel Torres Carbo.  See what we mean... an enormous history of winemaking. What we really like is that in doing this so long they understand their place in the environment.  They have committed themselves to fighting the threat of climate change and have won numerous awards for minimizing their environmental impact.  We like it because they care AND they make delicious Moscatel de Alejandria too.
